Elchingen

14 October 1805

The clash at Elchingen occurred when an almost-surrounded General Mack sent out a small force of men to make contact with what he hoped was a nearby Russian army under General Kutusov.

The Austrians, however, found themselves up against Marshal Ney's VI Corps and immediately occupied the town that the French had only just been ordered out of by Marshal Murat.

Ney attacked Elchingen and an all-morning fight only ended when the Austrians retreated in the face of French reinforcements that threatened to trap them.

Ney suffered 3000 casualties and the Austrians 4000.
